Guiding Light~ The End

I started watching Soap Operas when I was very small, probably around the age of 5. Everyone in my family watched all the CBS soaps and it was always the topic of conversation when we got together. Since most of them were on while I was in school, GL became the first soap I got addicted to. I've had periods of time (years) where I haven't had time to watched, but what they say is true...you can always get right back into it.

I haven't watched soaps since I was on maternity leave with Boog, so it's been 6 years, but when I heard that the show was going off the air, I HAD to see the final episodes. I still don't have time during the day, but thanks to our trusty DVR, I was able to record this final week. Each night after everyone went to bed, I would watch all my old favorites come back to town. With a wedding (that turned into 2) and a death, several old characters came back to say their final good byes.

As I watched the very last episode last night, I not only remembered all the old story lines but also thought about all the people I used to enjoy this show with...that are no longer with us. My mother and grandmother were die-hard fans and would have been very sad to see this show end. It, however, outlasted both of them.

It's been a very reflective couple of months for me. We (my husband and I) have had several family deaths and just Wednesday one of our neighbors passed away. It makes me want to hold my kids close and cherish all of my relationships. I'm reaching out to family and friends to let them know how much they mean to me. Life is short and I think it is important to not lose sight of how we got to where we are and all the relationships that have helped mold us into the people we are today.

  1. Though not a soap fan even a teeny tiny bit, I completely relate to your emotions. My grandmother as the world turns, and general hospital. I can remember as a kid she would speak about these characters as if they lived next door. It used to make my Mom crazy. Mom was busy raising 3 kids on a limited income, working really hard from sun up to sundown and she couldn't relate to someone who was glued to the tube. Even in her later years Mom never watched soaps. She did watch lots of tv, more than I can stomach; but I do indeed relate to hug your kids, tell everyone you care about you love them, and make the most of each day. Live life without regrets. Sorry for your loss, we've had more than our fair share recently as well, and so I understand where you're coming from.

  2. Very well stated~ Hug your kids and let those you love, know how special they are to you. Guiding Light~ What an awesome run- You will be missed! I was so glad when Josh/Reva met up "one year" later! The box of tissues disappeared during the final hour of this very successful soap opera. I guess it's all just a sign of the times we live in! Guiding Light~ I will miss you!

  3. I just started watching a few, but only when I'm getting my hair done! But it's crazy how they can hit you sometimes, and how they can tie in with your life and what you're feeling.

  4. It's amazing to think how long some of these soaps have been on the air! It makes it that much sadder to see them go, they've been watched by generations.

  5. You made my day yesterday. I've had one heck of a week, yesterday particular difficult at work. When I got home to tired to think about dinner and saw your package....it helped. So you see you've done more than you know.

    You've helped me feel better, you've helped those in need (and thats the really important part).

    I watched the last few episodes as well. Like you, started watching when I was very young. It was a constant throughout my life. There when I felt like it and I knew it would be there when ever I needed a GL fix. Loved how they wrapped things up though. Ultimately the characters all found a way to live at peace with each other despite all their differences through the power of forgiveness. And the genuine love that these actors must have felt toward each other after all these years was something you could see through in their acting. I will miss the show even though I haven't watched in about a year since I started working more regularly from home. but oddly for me, the actors who seem like familiar old friends, will be missed, and like real friends, irreplaceable. I don't know if that makes me a sad sap, or just sad. But I'm glad I'm not the only one that is said to see it go.
